Lone Lindsay Clancy Juror Accused of Reenacting Stranglings During Deliberations: ‘I Was Shocked’
A juror who served on the panel in Lindsay Clancy’s closely watched murder trial has described a disturbing moment inside the jury room, saying the lone holdout appeared to reenact the strangulations that killed Clancy’s three young children.
Nick Dargie, one of the jurors who later spoke publicly about the deliberations, told ABC News that the unidentified male juror picked up an exercise band that had been introduced as evidence during the trial. According to Dargie, the juror wrapped the band around an empty water bottle and pulled it.
“I was shocked,” Dargie said, explaining that he questioned why the juror was doing it. He characterized the moment as inappropriate given the seriousness of the case. {"fallbackMarkdown":"(Boston.com

The episode came during tense deliberations that ultimately ended without a unanimous verdict. Clancy, 36, was charged in connection with the January 2023 deaths of her children, Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, at the family’s home in Duxbury, Massachusetts.
Clancy’s defense argued that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and was not criminally responsible for the killings. Prosecutors, meanwhile, argued that she deliberately killed the children and understood the nature and wrongfulness of her actions. {"fallbackMarkdown":"(Stamford Advocate

A jury divided over the insanity defense
After weeks of testimony, the 12-member jury spent days deliberating. Several jurors have said the panel eventually moved toward an 11-1 split in favor of finding Clancy not guilty by reason of insanity.
The lone holdout, however, refused to join that conclusion. According to fellow jurors, he expressed doubt about the prosecution’s case but still maintained that Clancy should be found criminally responsible.
Dargie also said the holdout repeatedly failed to identify specific testimony or evidence that supported his position when other jurors asked him to explain his reasoning. The juror was also accused of being disengaged at times, including allegedly using his phone during deliberations. {"fallbackMarkdown":"(Good Morning America

It is important to note that these descriptions come from fellow jurors speaking publicly after the trial. The holdout juror has not publicly provided his own account of the deliberations.
The mistrial
The disagreement eventually became impossible to resolve. After roughly 38 hours of deliberations, the jury remained deadlocked, and Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial on September 4.
The outcome does not amount to an acquittal. Prosecutors must now decide whether to pursue a new trial, while Clancy’s defense has sought to have the case ended rather than retried. A further court hearing is scheduled for September 29. {"fallbackMarkdown":"(CT Insider

Most of the 12-member jury, consisting of nine women and three men, supported this defense. However, one male juror, identified only as a Black man and reportedly the sole person of color on the panel, refused to agree, despite admitting he had reasonable doubt. Fellow jurors criticized his behavior during deliberations, citing lack of engagement, dismissiveness toward expert testimony, and disruptive conduct, including a reenactment using trial evidence. This ultimately drove the deadlock after more than 38 hours of deliberation. Judge William Sullivan confirmed the juror’s failure to follow legal instructions and declared a mistrial. Prosecutors must now decide whether to retry the case. The case has generated intense public interest because of the competing questions surrounding mental illness, criminal responsibility and the evidence presented about Clancy’s mental state at the time of the killings.
The latest revelations about the jury room have added another layer of controversy. For the jurors who spoke publicly, the alleged reenactment was particularly unsettling because it involved an item directly connected to the prosecution’s account of how the children died.
Dargie said the incident left him struggling to understand the holdout’s approach to the deliberations.
The disagreement ultimately illustrates one of the defining features of a criminal jury trial: even in a case involving deeply disturbing allegations, every juror must be able to reach an individual conclusion based on the evidence and the law. When unanimity cannot be achieved, the result can be a mistrial rather than a definitive verdict.
